I am not going to lie - ever since I moved to this part of the world it hasn’t failed to impress me every single day. Be it the history, culture, stunning scenic views, or the enchanting countryside, England has plenty to offer to its visitors. However, even if the list of attractions and places to visit here are pretty long, for me, English villages have a different kind of charm that you can’t afford to miss. So without further ado, let me tell you about two beautiful villages steeped in history and brimming with natural beauty.

About Goring and Streatley

After visiting these villages I was curious about how come two villages that are part of different counties share so many things. I started reading about their history and came across some interesting facts about this settlement.

  • Goring and Streatley are twin villages in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the boundary of Berkshire and Oxfordshire respectively, in England.
  • The two villages cluster around a bridge across the River Thames, with an adjacent lock and weir. Both villages showcase quaint thatched cottages and pubs, which are a treat to their visitor’s eyes.
  • Today, these villages are good neighbours, but it hasn’t always been the case. In the year 795 AD, Goring and Streatley, due to the river boundary, were part of the different Anglo Saxon Kingdoms which were often at war with each other. By the year 1000 AD, both villages were united in Wessex in the reign of Ethelred the Unready. After the Norman invasion by William the Conqueror, they finally became good neighbours.
  • Goring & Streatley have always been special in the geographical sense too. In the olden times, they were the only intersection of three ancient trade routes across southern England (The Ridgeway, The Icknield Way, and The Thames). They are still the only intersection of two present-day National Trails (The Ridgeway and Thames Path) and part of two other long-distance routes, The Icknield Way and The Swan’s Way.
  • If you ever heard of or watch the Midsomer Murders/Barnaby series then you will be surprised to know that these villages are used as prominent locations to film these series.
